At KYDO, our mission is simple yet powerful – to give back to the community and create a positive impact on the lives of those in need. Founded by Lazarus Okello, a compassionate Sudanese man, our non-profit organisation is dedicated to building a more inclusive and compassionate society. With a focus on empowering vulnerable families and children, we work towards making our Community a better place for everyone.

The southern Sudanese community in Blacktown showcases remarkable diversity, with members hailing from various regions like Khartoum, Egypt, Kenya, and Uganda due to the enduring civil conflict. Their languages range from Dinka, Arabic, Acholi, to various dialects.

Life in Blacktown poses multiple challenges for Sudanese refugees. They navigate finding shelter and jobs, learning a new language, mastering daily tasks like driving and paperwork, adapting to education or vocational training, forging new connections and friendships, adjusting to distinct cultural norms and dietary habits, and understanding new rights and duties. Yet, despite these obstacles, Sudanese settlers in Blacktown exhibit tremendous courage and resilience.

One significant draw for many South Sudanese refugees relocating to Blacktown is the existing established Sudanese community. These residents provide essential support and understanding, sharing similar experiences of displacement, language, beliefs, humour, and culinary traditions. They offer a strong sense of belonging.

However, some Sudanese adults face greater challenges in adaptation, especially those responsible for family income seeking new skills and qualifications. The shift from independence to reliance on welfare benefits until finding employment is particularly tough. Some struggle with feelings of losing their expertise. These difficulties emerge while endeavouring to integrate into a new lifestyle, establishing ties within the Sudanese and broader local community, all while managing financial obligations.
